Mapmaker: Berlinghieri (Ptolemy)

Title: Tabula Secunda De Asia (Western Russia).

Date: 1482 Size: 37x41cm. Price: £6000

Condition: Fine. (The central vertical part of the map was not printed to allow for binding it into an atlas. Later, maps were mounted on strips of paper called guards, which were inserted into the binding).

Lower left: Bosphorous and triangular Sea of Azov. Lower right:: northern tip of the Caspian sea and the Volga river.

This map is from Berlinghieri's Ptolemy atlas, which was produced in Florence, Italy. It is the first 'available' printed map of Western Russia.
