Mapmaker: Ortelius

Title: Italiae Novissima Descriptio

Date: 1575 Size: 36x51cm. Price: £850

Condition: Fine.

Beautiful old colour. The copper plate  was altered in editions printed after 1581. In these later editions the vignette depicts Neptune seated side-by-side the mermaid, not facing towards her. The only known example of map censorship on the grounds of impropriety.
