Mapmaker: Wells

Title: A New Map of France

Date: 1700 Size: 36x50cm. Price: £400

Condition: Fine. Narrow side margins. A few tiny spots.

Edward Wells was one of the most accurate cartographers of his time. This is the only known printed map that points out the inaccuracies of another cartographer's work. An engraved line labelled  'Sansons coast' shows the coastlines of France and Southern England as depicted on maps by Nicolas Sanson, 'the father of French cartography' (see below). Wells' improvements were ignored by many continental mapmakers for the next 60 years.
