The only Lafreri map of Southern Africa. The term 'Lafreri' refers to a group of Italian engravers who were active in the second half of the sixteenth century. Livio Sanuto produced 12 maps of Africa, which were to be the beginning of a world atlas. Unfortunately, he died so his output became the first Atlas of African maps. His map of Southern Africa was the most advanced of its tlme and was copied many years later by Sanson.
