Prior to these harbour works, Cape Town 'harbour' had no breakwater. In the event of storms, ships anchored off Cape Town had to take to sea to avoid catastrophe. The breakwater was completed in 1859 and opened by Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son. The contours on the left, adjacent to the centre of Cape Town, represent the summit of Signal Hill.
