Prices of antique maps in this catalogue reflect their historical importance, edition, rarity, beauty, recent economic trends and other factors. However, because antique maps were printed, condition distinguishes between otherwise identical maps. An antique map in fine condition means it has not been damaged (except for minor blemishes), it has not been restored in any way or cleaned and the printed impression is ‘fine’. Each of these factors affects the desirability of an antique map and therefore its financial value. And so does the aesthetic enhancement to a map that colouring may provide. So ‘fine’ is not at the top of the scale, although it is better than ‘very good’. Please note that many antique maps were folded by the publisher or had their blank margins reduced to fit them into books. These do not detract from an antique map's value.

Choosing an antique map perhaps as a gift is often done by selecting a region (by scrolling down the list above and clicking on 'search') and then selecting an antique map from the thumbnail menu. Cities are very popular and do not need to be framed as recipients usually prefer to do this themselves. Today, framers world-wide use acid-free materials, which protect antique maps.  Examples of antique city plans on this website include those listed under France - Paris; America North - New York; Africa Southern - Cape Town; Europe South East: - Vienna; Russia - Moscow; UK - London, Japan - Tokyo.
